Kabuki is an japonese epic theatre traditiannaly performed by men even for the female roles. Onna (“women’s”) Kabuki were at the origin of the Kabuki theatre but they were officially banned in 1629 by a shogun, who thought that the sensuality of the dances had a deleterious effect on public morality.
